The Pen

The earliest writing we can read is not poetry or prayer. It is receipts: so many measures of barley, so many sheep, owed by whom.

Why was the first thing we did with permanent thought to count what we owned, and then to write down the rules?

The Wheeled Suitcase

1970

We had wheels for five thousand years and suitcases for centuries, and did not put them together until 1970. The upright roll-aboard waited until 1987, invented by an airline pilot.

How does an idea this obvious manage to hide in plain sight for millennia?

The QWERTY Keyboard

1870s

The layout was arranged to keep common letter-pairs apart so the typebars of a machine that no longer exists would not jam. It then beat every "better" keyboard that followed.

Why are we all still typing on a fix for a 19th-century mechanical problem?

The Traffic Light

1868

Red meant danger on the railways before cars existed. The first traffic signal, gas-lit, in London in 1868, exploded within weeks and injured the policeman operating it.

20th c.

The species that standardised time and the metre never agreed on a hole in the wall. There are roughly fifteen incompatible plug types, each a frozen national accident.

Why is the simplest interface in your home the one thing we could never standardise?

It is round so it cannot fall through its own hole: a small piece of geometry, cast into iron and repeated millions of times underfoot.

How much careful reasoning is hidden inside the object we are most likely to ignore?

The pin-tumbler lock is essentially ancient Egyptian. Every "unpickable" lock declared in four thousand years has eventually been picked, the most famous of them publicly, at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

In 1924 the world’s bulb makers secretly agreed to cap bulb life at a thousand hours. A bulb in a Livermore, California fire station has been burning since 1901.

The Clock

The Pencil
